Today 6/26/16 was a nice day and the weather was just right. Before I went down to the river I sat outside in the backyard had a beer and tied a slip bobber rig for my chicken liver sacks. And set up a sliding sinker rig on another rod for bottom fishing. The only fish I'm targeting this week are channel catfish and I really want to get a few of em' in the freezer for the 4th of July. If everything goes right I'll have a few of those Mississippi river cats in the smoker by next Monday. So lately I've been leaving around 5:00p.m but today I left around 6:30p.m.
Got to W River Pkwy and headed down to my fishing spot. As I walked the trails I saw a few trees down which were probably due to the storm that had passed through the other night. Finally arrived at the spot and saw a gentleman standing there listening to his iPod as I set my rods and stuff down I turned to him and said hi and he nodded and said hi, not long after he quietly left. First, I cast out the rod with the slip bobber rig and chicken liver sacks. Then I cast out my other rod with a 5/0 circle hook and some Sonny's dip bait. Then I waited as I sat on a rock and soaked in the ambiance of the river. Not more then a few minutes passed and no bites.
Two gentlemen walked down to where I was set up fishing and greeted me asking if I was having any luck, I replied no not yet. They seemed like nice folks they eventually took a seat on a log behind me and talked to each other for a good 30 mins or more. All the while no takers on the chicken liver nor the Sonny's dip bait, surprisingly. My one mistake today was sitting in one spot too long which is a big no. No bites within 30 mins then it's time to move around. I spent a good hour a so there before I packed up and headed back up the trail. Decided to take a left and cross over to my other good fishing spot which is little more secluded.
From this spot I can clearly see the ford bridge and although I can tell by the Y-shaped sticks that other people fish here, I've never seen anyone here fishing except me. Well I cast both the dip bait and the chicken liver sacks out and 15 mins or so passes by and something strong hits the Sonny's like nothing I've ever seen before. Just once it hit and bent the rod and then slowly let go. My heart almost jumped outta my chest, boy was adrenaline my pumping. And sadly that was it, nothing was biting today but a bunch of awful mosquitoes. As the sun goes down I'm usually just getting warmed up but today I was done and tired. The last two days down here we got skunked and no channel cats came calling.
Funny thing is they say the worst fishing is on a full moon. Well, my best night of fishing at this spot was on a calm clear cool night with a full moon shining right over us. Everything we caught was on Sonny's and hardly any mosquitoes were out.
